Phase 2 of letting go as a lawyer, and discovering your hidden talents, is to make sure your conservative professional training does not take charge of any new pursuits. Case in point (again) - me!
Having discovered I was able to unlock my creative side and write a 300 page work of fiction, the next challenge was to be open to creative editorial input. My initial reaction to the brilliant feedback from Dr Juliette Lachemeier at The Erudite Pen was to resist any change. As a lawyer for 35+ years (including 25+ as a Partner) I was not accustomed to changing my work. Apart from the usual lack of available time to redraft anything, as dictated by client deadlines, it was my work and I was no longer accustomed to any oversight.
Another step change was necessary for me. I was reminded that I had embarked on a creative journey, and that this was an essential component of that journey. This advice was a game changer. I let go completely and allowed the creative influence to direct the way forward. Half way through redrafting book 1 to cater for the editorial suggestions, I finally understood that I not only had to unlock the shackles of my professional training, I had to discard them completely.
By remembering what I had learned during the course of writing and publishing book 1, the journey for book 2 was a completely different, and far more enjoyable, experience.
My suggestion is to persevere with this process. I assure you it will be worthwhile.
